Medicinal sheepskin and lambskin

The medicinally tanned sheepskin or lambskin helps with pain caused by prolonged sitting or lying. The sheepskin helps to prevent pressure sores (decubitus) and has a pressure reducing effect, thus reducing pain. With a Texel medical sheepskin, you can prevent pressure sores and experience more comfort in bed, chair or wheelchair. Pressure sores, or bedsores, are caused by sitting or lying in one position for a long time. Decubitus is therefore common among bedridden patients in nursing homes or hospitals. Too much pressure on one part of the body can cause wounds and ulcers. A medicinally tanned sheepskin or lambskin is very soft for the skin, does not fester and reduces the pressure on painful areas.

A Texel medicinally tanned sheepskin is of high quality

The Texel sheepskins come from the Texel breed. The coat of the Texel is known as the best sheepskin due to its thick wool and structure. These properties make the wool firm but soft to the touch while being breathable. As a result, a fleece will not scalp and regulates temperature appropriately.

What is the difference between a medicinally tanned sheepskin and an ordinary coat?

A medicinally tanned sheepskin is tanned in a special way. This makes the coat extra soft and safe for the skin and preserves the lanolin or wool fat. The lanolin is known for its good properties for your skin and is therefore often used in sheep's wool creams.

In addition, a medicated sheepskin is shaved short. This brings the hairs of the wool to one length and makes it comfortable to lie or sit on. By shaving the medicinal fleece short, it is also pressure relieving and therefore helps in a natural way, with pain complaints.

A regular sheepskin is also very comfortable to sit or lie on, but due to the longer hairs, it is less suitable for healthcare. These coats are therefore often used for interior decoration.
The advantages of a medicinally tanned coat in a row:

The coat prevents bedsores (decubitus).

A safe natural product that helps with joint pain and other aches and pains.

Soft for the skin due to the lanolin present.

Moisture regulating and does not fester.

They are washable (in moderation) with a 30-degree wool wash.

What medicinal sheepskin to buy? We are happy to give advice!

If you are about to buy a medicinal sheepskin, it is good to know what to consider.

The right size sheepskin

The medicinal sheepskins come in three different sizes. The smallest is our medicated lambskin. A lambskin is smaller and finer than a sheepskin and because of its size, good to use for sitting on. The medicinal lambskin is also often used for in your baby's cot and ensures a safe and comfortable night's sleep.

Our large medicinal sheepskin is already a bit thicker and larger in size. This makes it good to use in a chair with a backrest or at the foot end of your bed. Indeed, pressure sores often occur on the heels.

The extra large medicinal sheepskin comes from the largest sheep and are longer than 125 cm. These furs are good for your chair but also for lying on in bed. This XL sheepskin can be used for many complaints due to its large size.

Medicinal sheepskin washing

The great advantage of a medicinal sheepskin, is that you can wash it. We do recommend not doing this too often, though, as the lanolin in the coat diminishes and the leather becomes stiff if it dries too quickly.

Our tips for washing a sheepskin coat:

Always wash the coat on a special wool wash programme and with a wool detergent

Let the coat dry as slowly as possible and stretch it occasionally while drying. Do not dry the coat in the sun or in the dryer

If the medicated coat is only dirty on the top, either wipe it with a damp cloth or clean it with a vacuum cleaner

Would you like more advice before buying a medicated sheepskin coat?
