Cleaning and maintaining sheepskin
The lanolin/wool grease that occurs naturally in sheepskin makes it dirt-repellent and self-cleaning. However, sheepskin can become a little dull or stained. What is the best way to clean it? We are happy to advise you!
Can you wash a sheepskin in the washing machine?
Washing a sheepskin is not recommended, as the lanolin will disappear from the coat and the leather will become stiff. A sheepskin that has been wet or washed in the washing machine will not improve.
But my sheepskin is really dirty and I would still like to wash it.
Steaming a sheepskin:
The best way is to have the sheepskin steamed with a special wool cleaning agent.
Cleaning sheepskin by hand washing:
Hand washing a sheepskin is best done in cold water and with a special wool detergent.
Washing a sheepskin in the washing machine:
Use this as a last resort. Wash the sheepskin on a special wool programme with a wool detergent. Does your washing machine not have a wool programme? Then use a short programme at a maximum of 30 degrees.
The way you dry the sheepskin is also important!
If the leather of the sheepskin dries too quickly, it will become hard and stiff, which is of course a shame. First shake and squeeze out a wet skin and then let it dry as slowly as possible. Do not hang the skin in the sun, but in the bathroom, for example, and stretch the leather regularly during the drying process. It may take a while for the skin to dry, but you will get the best result.
What is the best way to clean a sheepskin or remove stains?
Removing stains from sheepskin:
Stains in the wool can be rubbed clean with a damp cloth. Try not to wet the leather of the sheepskin.
Air a sheepskin outside:
Your sheepskin will often perk up if you beat it out and air it outside. Preferably in the mist! So when the humidity is high, but definitely not in the rain. Has it snowed? Then you can lay the sheepskin with the wool side down in the snow.
Brushing the wool of your rug works wonders:
Special brushes and wool combs are available to give the wool of your rug a makeover. If the wool looks less attractive and felted due to use, combing or brushing it will restore its soft appearance. This also removes dirt from the rug.
Vacuuming:
Over time, dirt and dust can become embedded in the wool of your sheepskin. You can clean your sheepskin by simply vacuuming it.
My sheepskin smells or has a strong odour
Due to the tanning process, which is mainly done with natural products, a sheepskin may smell quite strong at first. Lanolin can also have an odour that some people find unpleasant. Medicinal skins in particular have a strong smell at first. Some people find this smell unpleasant. In this case, it is best to air the skin outside from time to time. It is best to air a skin in high humidity, such as fog, but not in the rain.
The smell will always diminish after a few weeks and will eventually disappear completely.
What is wool grease/lanolin and what is it good for?
Sheepskins naturally contain lanolin/wool grease. This lanolin is actually more of a wax than a grease. Lanolin repels dirt and bacteria! So it actually keeps the coat clean. Wool grease also has a healing effect on your skin. It has healing properties and is therefore often used in creams and ointments.
Medicinal sheepskins or regular sheepskins, what is the difference?
Medicinal sheepskins and products:
Medicinal sheepskins or health skins are tanned in a special way, which gives them a slightly yellower colour, and are shorn shorter. This makes the skin more suitable for use in treating health complaints such as bedsores, asthma or joint problems. They are therefore intended for medical use. Medicinal skins are also often used for babies and children.
The special ecological tanning process also makes the skin easier to clean. The skin can therefore be washed, but this should be done as little as possible.
Sheepskins for your interior:
Our regular sheepskins are also naturally tanned and are intended for your interior, home and living room. A sheepskin gives a warm appearance and is very comfortable on the sofa, in your chair or outside on your terrace. This means that the skins are also available in several designs and colours!
