Over ons
Welcome to Skéépe! Our webshop is full of beautiful sheepskins from Texel. We would like to tell you more about these sheepskins.
If you were born on Texel, you won't think sheep are anything special. You grow up with them, because there are thousands of sheep on Texel. And if you cycle around the island, you will see sheep everywhere. It is only later at school that you learn about the Texel sheep, a special breed that is the progenitor of many sheep around the world.
The life of our Texel sheep
In addition to the 14,000 sheep that graze on Texel, thousands of lambs are born every year. Not only do many tourists come in early spring to admire (and pet) the lambs. For people who live on Texel, this new life and the beginning of a new spring season is also quite an experience. Every year, I take my two daughters to the sheep farm to pet the lambs. Shearing sheep is also an experience for a child and very educational.
As a Texel resident, I realised that the wool from the sheep and the coat of these animals are very special. It contains a high amount of wool grease (lanolin), especially that of a sheep that has actually lived on Texel. This is due to the salty wind and soil and the food they eat here. And even though you can find Texel sheep all over the world, our own Texel climate makes the coat and wool of a very high quality.
Texel sheep's wool is well known, think of the duvets and pillows. But what about the sheepskins? Through various channels, I found out that the skins of Texel sheep were not being used. This surprised me and I wanted to do something about it! To cut a long story short... I started using the skins and we now sell the best quality sheepskin available. A 100% natural and ecological product. And that for the same price as all other sheepskins in the world. People are very surprised when we let them feel the difference in quality between different skins.
We make beautiful sheepskins in all colours. For home and living, babies and pets. But what makes me really happy is that we now also make products that help people. People who are bedridden and/or wheelchair-bound and/or suffer from bedsores (decubitus). Think of a heel protector, for example. The wounds heal through the use of our medicinal sheepskin products from Texel. Clients want to continue using our products preventively. I am so proud of this! We are currently busy developing new products for the coccyx and elbow, for example. To this end, we are collaborating with the North Holland home care organisation Omring.

A sustainable residual product
It is important to note that the sheep are not slaughtered for their fleece but for their meat. Because Skéépe believes in the sustainable use of such residual products, we have these special fleeces tanned, giving the fleece of the Texel sheep a second life!
Where do the sheep fleeces come from?
What makes our fleeces unique is that they are not only from the Texel breed of sheep, but also have lived with Texel farmers. The sheep and lambs roam freely in the Texel countryside and enjoy the space in the meadows. The special island climate on Texel gives the sheep's fleece a unique structure and makes it of particularly good quality.
The pride of Texel quality
Texel is proud of its sheep and its sheep's wool. Texel wool is very unique. The wool is nourished by the salty sea air, wind and sun. These conditions produce the best wool because they make the Texel sheep's fleece voluminous and crimped. This makes it extra soft, resilient and optimally insulating. Thanks to this ideal combination of insulation and ventilation, the sheep's coat adapts to your body temperature, keeping you wonderfully warm in winter and nice and cool in summer.
Purely natural and sustainable
The sun, wind and sea air make the coat coarser, rough but soft and of a thicker quality. It is therefore suitable for a wide range of purposes. Texel wool is also used in duvets, pillows, underblankets, futons, clothing and many other products. This creates a beautiful natural product: pure, unadulterated new wool. And the best thing is: when the fleece is sheared, the wool grows back naturally after each shearing!
Soft and warm support
Sheepskins also have a positive effect on our health. A sheepskin is a proven preventive aid against bedsores (decubitus). People who suffer from muscle pain or back problems are also best off lying on a sheepskin. Because the coat is so dense, your body heat is retained when you sit or lie on it. A Texel sheepskin is a wonderfully soft support that provides relief from (bedsore) pain.
Feel free to take a look at our range of Texel sheepskins. We have sheepskins in various types, sizes and colours.
